As blood pulses through the vessels, the device differentiates the oxygenated hemoglobin from deoxygenated hemoglobin based on light absorption characteristics.

The ratio of absorbed red and infrared light allows the microprocessor to calculate the SpO2 level, typically expressed as a percentage. It simultaneously detects the pulse by sensing tiny variations in the volume of blood with each heartbeat.
